Diesel theft from vehicle

The increasing cost of road diesel is leading to more HGVs and lorries being targeted by fuel thieves, particularly when they are parked up in quieter areas.

  • We are working with petrol stations, lorry parks and service stations, to remind drivers to remain vigilant when they park their vehicles and to follow the following advice to help reduce their chances of becoming a victim of fuel theft.
  • Always park in a well lit, well used area
  • Try to park with your fuel tank facing the road so passing traffic make it less of a target
  • Locking fuel caps are not recommended as thieves will often just puncture the tank instead causing even more damage
  • Devices can be fitted to the filler cap that activate the vehicle’s alarm when tampered with
  • When parking in a lorry park, try to park very close to the next lorry so the fuel tanks are difficult to access
  • Always try and park in areas monitored by CCTV
  • Try and avoid parking up lorries with full fuel tanks overnight

We are committed to catching those responsible for diesel theft in Cambridgeshire and urge anyone who sees suspicious behaviour around vehicles, particularly parked lorries and HGVs, to contact us on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
