Hello everybody!
My name is Lukas and I’m a German Shepherd puppy. I have just joined Cambridgeshire police dog training programme in the hope that one day I can be a police dog like some of my brothers and sisters!
My handler Paul came to pick me up from my mum back in November last year. I know that my mum and some of my aunties have provided dogs to the police force before, so I was very excited when he walked in. I liked the look of him and wanted to play, so ran up to him and gave him a little nibble on the arm. Paul’s my new dad now, and he’s going to help me try and become a proper police dog over the next year. I can’t wait!
It was Paul who named me Lukas. His wife said he’s mad about speedway racing, and one of his favourite racers is the Czech rider Lukas Dryml who used to race for the Peterborough Panthers. I only hope I can be as successful as him with my dog training!
I live at home with Paul and his wife. I have my very own kennel in the garden which is huge! It’s really comfy with lots of bedding and plenty of toys for me to play with. I’m also lucky enough to have my two big brothers Yeoman and George in their kennels either side of me. They’re police dogs at the moment, and they’re always telling me about what they get up to, so I can’t wait to see if I’m lucky enough to be able to become a proper police dog with Cambridgeshire police. I’m too young for any proper training at the moment though, but Paul keeps taking me out and about to see how I get on in different situations. We went up to the dog unit the other day at Alconbury so I could meet everyone, it was really nice and everyone is so friendly. Paul was chatting away in the coffee room with the others dog handlers, so I decided to test out my detective skills and went rummaging around in the nearest cupboard I could find… turns out it was the cleaners’ cupboards. His wife is always saying how Paul needs to do more round the house so I thought he might want to practice at work, so I took him the vacuum cleaner in my mouth and all he did was laugh!
I also went along to the Peterborough United home game with all the other dogs because Paul said I need to start to get used to being around big crowds. It was really exciting being around so many people. Paul said I did really well. Because I’m so little at the moment, I had to stand behind Leo who is a fully trained police dog. He’s really good at his job so made me feel nice and safe. Paul likes to watch football on the telly at home; his wife even says he watches too much football. So I thought I’d help her out by chewing through the cable outside to see if it would stop him watching so much… it worked, but they also then had to pay £60 to get reconnected. Whoops! Paul’s are always saying I’m really mischievous.
I also did some modelling for the police just before Christmas when I was even smaller. A lovely lady called Michelle wanted to take my picture for their Christmas card. We had lots of props like tinsel and cotton wool balls to look like snow. I even had a Christmas hat. I did give her the run around though ha ha! She said she was really pleased with what I did, and I got to meet so many police officers that day who all gave me loads of attention. I just hope I get to work with them all one day.
I’ll be updating you every month with what I’ve been up to, so follow me through my journey on trying to be a proper police dog!!
If you’ve got any questions for me, submit them here and I’ll try to answer them in my next blog.
